The South Asian Studies Program seeks 1 Course Instructor for the following course:

SAS114H1F: Introduction to South Asian Studies

An interdisciplinary introduction to South Asian Studies emphasizing inquiry and critical analysis, drawing attention to the specificities of individual nations as well as the historical, political, economic and cultural factors that define South Asia as a region. Attention will also be paid to the South Asian diaspora.


Working on PhD or post-doctoral fellows in the disciplines of History, Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, Religion or South Asian Cultural Studies, with current knowledge of research in these areas required. A strong scholarly background in disciplines relevant to the course is preferred. As the course is an important bridge to the South Asian Studies minor and the Contemporary Asian Studies program, the candidate would preferably have pedagogical and/or research experience that addresses larger global themes, such as democracy and authoritarianism, public culture, and capitalism, through deep site-specific study. Previous teaching experience is preferred. First consideration will be given to full-time graduate students at the University of Toronto.

  • Planning and teaching weekly lecture
  • Creating and marking tests and assignments
  • Providing scheduled office hours for academic counselling
  • Maintaining Blackboard site

Estimate of TA Support: None

Estimated Course Enrolment:  50 students

Dates of Appointment: September 1 to December 31, 2017

Class schedule: Tuesdays, 2:00-4:00 pm

Rate of Pay: $7,385.12 including vacation pay
