The Contemporary Asian Studies program seeks one Teaching Assistant for the following course:

CAS310H1: Comparative Colonialisms in Asia

Course instructor: Professor Takashi Fujitani

This course analyzes the impact of colonialism in South, East, and Southeast Asia and the various ways in which pre-colonial traditions intersect with and reshape colonial and postcolonial process across the various regions of Asia. The course will examine the conjunctures of economy, politics, religion, education, ethnicity, gender, and caste, as these have played out over time in the making and re-making of Asia as both idea and place. Attention will be paid to postcolonial and indigenous theories, questions of ‘the colonial’ from the perspective of Asian Studies, and debates about the meaning of post colonialism for the study of Asia now and in the future.


A background in Asia-Pacific and/or South Asian studies is required, preferably from an interdisciplinary and multi-regional social science perspective. First consideration will be given to full-time senior graduate students at the University of Toronto. TA experience is preferred.


  • Attend weekly lectures and bi-weekly meetings with the professor
  • Mark 2 essays (5 pages each) and 1 final essay (10 pages)
  • Hold office hours the week after assignments are returned

 Course timetable: Thursdays, 4-6

Hours of work: approx. 70 hours total  

Estimated Course Enrolment: 45 students

Rate of Pay: SGS I/II – $43.65hour  (+ 4% Vacation Pay)
