Susan Grant is an Irish Research Council CARA Mobility Postdoctoral Fellow, University College Dublin (2011-2014) and affiliated with CERES 2011-2013. She received her PhD from University College Dublin in 2010 and was awarded an Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences postdoctoral fellowship (2010-2011) to prepare her dissertation for publication. Her recently published book, Sport and Physical Culture in Soviet Society: Propaganda, Acculturation, and Transformation in the 1920s and 1930s (New York and London: Routledge, 2012), examines how the ideology of physical culture was deployed to help forge the new Soviet citizen. Other publications include articles in Revolutionary Russia, Slavonic and East European Review, and The Soviet and Post-Soviet Review. Susan’s current project, for which she was awarded her fellowship, examines nursing in Russia and the Soviet Union, 1914-1941. She also holds the Alice Fisher Fellowship at the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania.
