Sukanya Pillay is an international lawyer, has worked at organizations in North America, Europe and Asia, and has been a law professor. For several years, Sukanya has been General Counsel and Executive Director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, directing its activities relating to Canadian policies on counter-terrorism and national security, police accountability, freedom of expression, and equality. She has conducted human rights missions to over 20 countries worldwide collecting video evidence of rights violations, and has made documentaries and used photography to advance rights and remedies. She is the inaugural Maytree Foundation Scholar in Poverty and Human Right and will focus her reporting on poverty through the lens of rights in Canada and around the world. She will also cover civil liberties issues outside of Canada.
