Governance and Finance of Metropolitan Areas in Federal Systems

IMFG Director Enid Slack and Rupak Chattopadhyay, President and CEO of the Forum of Federations, have edited a new book entitled Governance and Finance of Metropolitan Areas in Federal Systems (Oxford University Press, 2013). They will be making a presentation on May 23rd, which will compare the findings on the governance and finance of eighteen metropolitan areas in federal systems around the world, and identify some of the issues that will need to be resolved if these areas are to thrive in the future. Copies of the book will be available for sale after the presentation.

“International Comparison of Global City Financing,” (2013) an IMFG research paper for the London Finance Commission (UK), written by IMFG Director Enid Slack, examines how major global cities including New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Madrid are financed, and provides implications for the fiscal autonomy of London. The LFC was appointed by London Mayor Boris Johnson to assess how to improve the tax and public spending arrangements for the UK’s capital region.
