CEES celebrates James Retallack's appointment to the Order of Canada
The Centre for European and Eurasian Studies (CEES) is thrilled to congratulate Professor Emeritus James Retallack on his recent appointment to the Order of Canada - one of the highest civilian honours in our country. Professor Retallack was among 80 individuals, including several other University of Toronto faculty, to be recognized by the Governor General for "outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation."
In the Order of Canada citation, Professor Retallack is described as "Canada’s leading scholar of modern German history. Recognized as an international authority in the field, he has advanced public debate about democracy. As one of the first Anglo-American academics to conduct research in the former East Germany, he has uncovered new sources and writes innovatively about political history."
Governor General Mary Simon released a statement, along with the announcement of this latest round of appointees, on December 31, 2025. "The Order of Canada fosters a sense of pride and cohesion in our country," she said. "Every appointment celebrates not only the talent, expertise, and dedication of individuals, but also the countless lives they have touched through their work, vision, and contributions. Their commitment extends beyond borders, inspiring progress in our communities, our country, and around the world."
Congratulations to Professor Retallack from the entire CEES community!
