CEES MA students launch 'Eurasiatique, Volume XIV: Emergence from the Periphery'

The Centre for European and Eurasian Studies (CEES) is very proud to celebrate the launch and publication of the annual graduate student journal Eurasiatique. This year’s volume, titled “Eurasiatique, Volume XIV: Emergence from the Periphery,” features nine interdisciplinary academic articles, written by graduate students from CEES, as well as from other institutions around the world, and covering a wide range of original research topics.

The journal’s editorial board, comprised entirely of CEES MA students, oversaw all steps of the publishing process, from conceptualizing the journal’s theme, to putting out an international call for submissions, deciding on content, editing articles, designing layout, and arranging the online and print publications. They received 21 submissions in total, which were narrowed down to the nine included in the final publication. Topics in this year’s journal include: European fascism and anti-imperial politics in the British Empire leading up to, and during, the Second World War; the role of oral poetry and early print media in Soviet Kyrgyzstan; the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War as portrayed by a privately-owned daily newspaper in Russia; and an examination of Nazi conceptions of masculinity, focusing on Jewish and homosexual victims of the Holocaust.

Eurasiatique, like our Centre, is interdisciplinary, and I believe that this student initiative – the Eurasiatique journal – is CEES at its best. The students' collaboration and the variety of disciplines that intersect in the journal are exceptional,” reflected Benedek Gulyás, journal Editor-in-Chief and a second-year CEES MA student.

Gulyás explained that, along with editing and assembling this year’s volume, the editorial board also worked to “ensure the longevity of the journal and its legacy,” by digitizing previous volumes and updating the Eurasiatique website archive.

“I hope that the care the editorial board put into Eurasiatique inspires future students to follow suit,” Gulyás concluded. “As an annual publication, it's truly never the same – even if you participate in both years of your MA.”

Congratulations to the Eurasiatique editorial board and contributors on all your hard work!
