Call for Proposals: CERES Graduate Student Conference
The Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies’ (CERES) Graduate Student Union is pleased to invite submissions for its annual graduate student conference at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. We will have in-person attendance, with the possibility of viewing the conference remotely, from March 9 to March 11, 2023.
The theme of this year’s conference is Identity and Place: A Discussion of Borders, Transformation, Histories, and Movements. As we witness large-scale migrations of peoples, ongoing tensions from unresolved conflicts, and contestations over borders, we begin to examine how historical and contemporary territorial disputes have shaped and transformed social, national, and political identities. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, in tandem with other conflicts, has brought significant visibility to the intertwining relationship between identity and place. We have observed how states and institutions attempt to define this relationship alongside or in opposition to the self-identification of populations, as well as how this has contributed to movements across and transformations of borders. We invite the participation of all graduate students who are interested in critical examinations of identity and place in the regions we broadly term Europe, Russia, and Eurasia.
Through this conference, CERES will offer graduate students both academic rigour and professional training. The conference will feature a guest keynote presentation from a leading scholar and/or practitioner on this year’s theme. In addition to conference presentations, a PhD application workshop and several social events will be offered.
We welcome applications from graduate students across the social sciences and humanities disciplines, including political science, history, international relations, gender studies, criminology, sociology, anthropology, public policy, and literature. Prospective participants should propose a 15-20 minute presentation that addresses questions of how historical and contemporary social movements have shaped identity; how separatist movements, referendums, and/or partitions highlight disputes between populations and states on identity; how vulnerable populations within and across borders interact with contemporary notions of identity; and how fractured borders and democratic transitions have left a lasting impact on identity in Europe, Russia, and Eurasia. We welcome both individual and panel proposals. There is no fee to attend the conference.
