On November 21, 2019, The Centre for the Study of Global Japan hosted its first official event of year and welcomed renowned Japanese foreign policy expert Takako Hikotani. Professor Hikotani is Gerald L. Curtis Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy at Columbia University. Professor Hikotani delivered a lecture about Japan’s ‘value diplomacy,’ emphasizing the four values of universalism, developmentalism, Asianism, and pacificism. She also discussed recent shifts in Japanese policy in relation to the rise of China. The lecture inspired a series of thoughtful and engaging questions from the audience during the Q&A session that followed. The Centre would like to thank Professor Hikotani and all attendees for making this event a great success.
