Populism’s Mitigated Potency in Japan and Implications for Mature Democracies

Despite Japan’s economic struggles, populism has made limited electoral impact. Jiajia Zhou explores how the local organizational strength of incumbent parties mitigates the effectiveness of populist rhetoric and, in doing so, may facilitate the pursuit of electorally challenging policies.
