Awards, Opportunity: CSUS Graduate Research Grants Competition (2021-22)

Eligibility and terms:

The graduate research grant competition is open to University of Toronto graduate students who have matriculated into a PhD program, to support research (including preliminary research) undertaken for the dissertation. Students in all disciplines are encouraged to apply. At least two grants will be awarded in the amount of $1,500 cad each. These awards are to be used primarily for research travel; in limited instances funds may be applied to presentations at major academic conferences. Funds may not be used to pay for normal living expenses or computers. Recipients will be expected to present on an aspect of their research in a CSUS graduate student workshop during the 2021-2022 academic year. The deadline to apply is, May 31st, 2021. Awards will be announced within one month of the application deadline, and the grants will be available within one month thereafter. If Covid-19 travel restrictions delay archival research trips, award funds will remain valid until research travel is possible.

Applications must include:

  • Summary sheet stating the applicant’s name, address, phone, and e-mail; department; year entering department; proposed dissertation title; the name of the faculty committee members (and their departments), if relevant; and proposed use of funds.
  • A summary (approx. 500 words) of the research project. This statement should explain the project’s relationship to either the interdisciplinary field of American Studies and/or to the study of the united states.
  • A current cv.
  • A detailed budget describing how the research funds would be spent.

Awards, Opportunity: CSUS Bissell-Heyd Research Fellow (2021-22)

The Centre for the Study of the United States at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy seeks to appoint one Bissell-Heyd Research Fellow for the period of September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022.

Research Fellows are limited to current Assistant and Associate Professors at the University of Toronto. Their research interests should be related to the study of the United States, broadly conceived. Research Fellows will be asked to coordinate a public research event or series of events, with the Centre’s assistance. These events will be the initiative of the Fellow and will reflect their own interests. Centre resources will be available to coordinate events and to aid in procuring additional resources, if needed.

Fellows will receive a stipend of $10,000 to support the costs of the research event. In exceptional cases, where external research funding has already been secured, the stipend may be used towards course release, conditional upon approval of the Fellow’s home-department Chair.

To apply, interested faculty members should submit:

  1. A current CV
  2. A brief description of their current research interests (approx. 500 words).
  3. A description of a public research event they propose to mount as part of the fellowship.

The New Associates Award/Ontario Residents

This award goes to an outstanding CSUS student entering the fourth year of their Major in American Studies. The award is given to an Ontario resident on the basis of need (determined by OSAP), Annual GPA, and a one-page letter outlining the applicant’s interests in American Studies. The award is for up to $6000.00 and is available in the Fall term of the fourth year. Applications are open to third-year students and are due by Monday, April 19th 2021.

The New Associates Award/Non-Resident

This award is for an outstanding CSUS student entering the fourth year of their Major in American Studies. The award is given on the basis of need (determined by student loan record or similar documentation), Annual GPA, and a one-page letter outlining the applicant’s interests in American Studies. Students do not have to be Ontario residents to be eligible for this award. The award is for at least $3000.00 and is available in the Fall term of the fourth year. Applications are open to third-year students and are due by Monday, April 19th, 2021.

The CSUS Undergraduate Writing Award

This award goes to the author of an outstanding essay in American Studies. The award is open to third and fourth-year American Studies Minors and Majors. The essay could be a submission to the undergraduate journal, or a major paper for a CSUS class. The award is for $250 and is given at the end of the academic year. Applications are due by Monday, April 19th, 2021.
