The American Studies undergraduate program is seeking one Teaching Assistant for the following course in the Winter 2019 semester :

USA300H1S: Theories and Methods in American Studies
Instructor: Dr. A. Rahr; Thursdays 12-2 pm
This course, required for majors and minors, but open to all who have met the prerequisites, explores a range of approaches to the field of American Studies. Students will be introduced to some of the many ‘theories and methods’ that have animated the field of American Studies, including historical methods; formal analysis of visual and literary texts; and key concepts, such as commodity chain analysis, ‘race,’ ‘commodity,’ ‘gender,’ ‘diaspora,’ and ‘affect.’

Description of Duties:
Designing tutorials in consultation with the instructor; teaching tutorials; marking/grading student papers and examinations; holding office hours for academic counselling of students.
Duties of this position shall be performed at the campus on which the position is located. Where the duties are intended to be performed at another location, such other location will be specified in the posting.

Enrollment: The estimated course enrollment is a maximum of 60 students. One Teaching Assistant will be hired; the appointment size, and number of hours, varies with the entitlement of the hired graduate student assistant.

Number of tutorial sections and dates/times: Maximum of 2; Thursdays: 2-3pm and 3-4pm.
Hours of work: Approx. 110 hours in total

Qualifications: Teaching experience in leading tutorials as well as an Americanist research focus are preferred. First consideration will be given to full-time graduate students at the University of Toronto.

Rate of Pay: $45.33 per hour (+ 4% vacation pay). Salary and qualifications are per the latest agreement with CUPE, Local 3902; standards and policies regarding the agreement are available in the Centre for the Study of the United States and in the CUPE Local 3902 office.

Final availability of the position is contingent upon enrollment, budgetary consideration, and the determination of appointments as governed by the collective agreement.

TAs will only be assigned to courses in fields in which they are or should be qualified to assist.

General Information

Generally speaking, for Fall and/or Winter courses, we expect to make hiring decisions June through September; Summer course hirings occur in March/April (note, however, that we do not usually run summer courses).
