Welcome from Professor Mark Duggan

Dear Munk School Community,

It is such a pleasure to welcome every one of you to a new academic year at the University of Toronto’s Munk School and to begin my first year as Director.

As I step into this role, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Founding Director Janice Stein for her visionary leadership and the commitment to academic excellence she has fostered at the Munk School. I am incredibly excited to be joining a global community with a shared interest in tackling many of the most important challenges facing our world. Whether we are thinking about issues such as global security, economic policy, climate change, threats to democracy, technological change, or immigration policy, meaningful progress starts with asking the most challenging questions. And the Munk School is a place where conversations and debate about these issues can take place openly and constructively.

One of the things that drew me to this outstanding school at Canada’s flagship university is its unique ability to bring insights from rigorous academic research into conversation with policymakers, practitioners, students, and the broader public here in Canada and throughout the world.

Over the next few weeks, I will be attending welcome events, meeting students, and learning more about our world-class School. I am looking forward to meeting many others in our community in the weeks and months ahead. I sincerely hope you will introduce yourselves when you see me around the Munk School or at one of our many events and activities.

There is so much to look forward to, and I am absolutely thrilled to begin this journey with all of you.
