Kylie Gionet

2018 Global Journalism Fellow

Biography

Kylie Gionet graduated from McMaster University in April 2012, and went on to obtain her post-graduate certification in Perioperative Nursing through Centennial College. She began her career at Toronto Western Hospital’s Operating Room, working predominantly in the areas of neurosurgery and spine. Prior to attending university, she spent time traveling and volunteering in Tanzania. During her time there she learned that it is access to basic, preventative care and health teaching that can drastically improve the health of a population. This is where she first cultivated an interest in healthcare. Gionet is also passionate about writing, and has always dreamed of eventually pursuing an education in journalism. The unique design of the Munk Fellowship has provided an opportunity for her to marry her love of travel and writing with her background in perioperative nursing. Throughout the upcoming year, Gionet is interested in exploring topics related to the area of perioperative nursing, and the collective role of nursing in global social responsibility. Beginning to think of nurses as journalists, and journalists as an extension of the healthcare team is about empowering nurses to take part in the global conversation.
