Post-Doctoral Fellow

Stephen Smith is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy where he is affiliated with the Belt and Road in Global Perspective research initiative. Dr. Smith’s current project looks at the adaptability of the Chinese Communist Party as it undergoes a historic re-consolidation of authority over Chinese state and society. His research has been published in International Journal, Pacific Review, and Foreign Policy Analysis. He recently contributed to an assessment of Canada-China relations for the Canadian International Council. His latest article explores how official Communist Party discourses work to legitimate expanded boundaries of state action.

Dr. Smith received his PhD from the Department of Political Science at Carleton University, where his dissertation examined the development of Chinese theories of world order. He recently spent two years at Fudan University in Shanghai as part of the Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange. This year, he will be designing and teaching a course on the regional politics of China’s “Belt and Road Initiative”.
