Md Mujahedul Islam (Mujahed) is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto, specializing in comparative politics and comparative public policy. He is a Research Fellow of the Policy, Elections, and Representation Lab (PEARL) in the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto, where he is involved with multidisciplinary and collaborative research projects that apply advanced statistical methods to examine questions of democratic representation, political behaviour, and political participation.
Mujahed’s primary research agenda examines how an individual-level distance from a society’s ethical position contributes to the current declines in democratic attitudes and political behaviour in established democracies. In a related, secondary agenda, his research also considers the impact of local candidates, ideological differences, and population size on democratic representation, political behaviour, and political participation. He employs a variety of methods–including surveys, experiments, observational data, textual data, case studies and interviews–to examine these and other topics. He has published in the Canadian Journal of Political Science and the Journal of European Social Policy. He has extensive experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in comparative politics, public policy, and quantitative research methods. Mujahed received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 2024 and a Master of Public Policy from the Hertie School in Berlin in 2016, majoring in quantitative policy analysis. He also received a Master of Social Sciences (2012) and a Bachelor of Social Sciences (2011) from the University of Dhaka with a distinction in Political Science. He completed an internship at the United Nations Headquarters (the UN Secretariat) in New York, USA, in 2015.
