Kate Motluk is a PhD Candidate in Geography. Her research focuses on issues of forced migration and carceral control. Kate’s dissertation focuses on access to asylum in the United Kingdom and examines the use of the Bibby Stockholm barge as a site of asylum-seeker accommodation. This work is generously funded by a SSHRC doctoral grant. Broadly, Kate is interested in issues of migration externalization, immigration detention, carceral control, and colonial logics. Her work has been published by the Geographical Journal, the PKI Global Justice Journal, and Border Criminologies.
Previously, Kate worked as the Toronto Chapter Lead for the Refugee Sponsorship Support Program, a pro-bono legal clinic, and as a Project Coordinator for the non-profit Lifeline Syria. While serving with these organizations, she assisted with the file management and submission of over 400 private sponsorship applications to the Canadian government.
