Why It Matters

The rule of law is a foundational value of the European Union and a prerequisite for any country seeking membership. At a time when Canada and the EU face shared challenges in defence, foreign policy, and the rules-based international order, this Chair strengthens understanding of EU values and policies among the next generation of scholars, policymakers, and engaged citizens. For graduate students at CEES, the Jean Monnet Chair represents a significant expansion of what is possible during their time at the University of Toronto — more direct access to European expertise, more opportunities to develop research skills, and more connections to the institutions and networks that define the study of Europe today.
