Belt & Road in Global Perspective

We aim to take stock of the rapidly developing and widely varying changes that are occurring in the wake of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Since Xi Jinping unveiled the “One Belt, One Road” strategy in 2013 in Kazakhstan, China has pledged nearly USD 1 trillion in development assistance and infrastructure spending in more than 60 countries. This massive and multi-faceted project—since renamed the BRI—has set in motion social, economic, and political transformations with the potential to reshape the globe.

Our project facilitates conversations between expert voices in order to understand the potentially massive transformations underway across the globe resulting from the BRI.

We are part of a burgeoning partnership between the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy (University of Toronto), Nazarbayev University, and National University Singapore. Supported by a grant from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, as well as the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, our project welcomes you.

Transformations: Downstream effects of the BRI

Our blog brings together scholars whose research considers how the BRI is reconfiguring social, cultural, and political forces around the globe. Blog entries consider how the BRI affects migration, labour relations, social mobilization, and more, from Western Europe and the Caucasus to Central Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
