Event Report: Artful Design + Artificial Intelligence: What Do We (Really) Want from AI?

On September 21st, 2023, the Initiative for Education Policy and Innovation at the Centre for the Study of Global Japan invited Professor Ge Wang from Stanford University to speak about the use of Artificial Intelligence in everyday life. The event took place in the Withrow Auditorium of the University of Toronto Schools. The presentation considered the relationship between AI and artistic design and included a live demonstration of an iPhone app developed by Professor Wang, which functions as an ocarina. Attendees included faculty and researchers from global institutions such as Stanford University, Keio University, Osaka Metropolitan University, MIT, and the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD), along with many students and community members. Professor Rie Kijima, the director of the Initiative for Education Policy and Innovation, organized the event in collaboration with the University of Toronto Schools and a variety of other partners. The event saw an impressive turnout, with the 700-seat auditorium at full capacity. A lively question-and-answer session with the audience followed the thought-provoking presentation.
