Event Report: From Japan to the World: Career Reflections with Consul Masahiro Matsui

On November 6, 2024, the Centre for the Study of Global Japan hosted an event, Career Reflections with Consul Masahiro Matsui, for students in the CSGJ Student Affiliate Program and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. The session featured Consul Masahiro Matsui from the Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto, who reflected on his career in foreign affairs, shared insights from his experiences, and offered advice to students.

Consul Matsui began by recounting his professional journey, highlighting his transition through various diplomatic roles in Tokyo, Jerusalem, and Toronto. He provided a particularly compelling account of his time in Jerusalem, where he supported Palestinian refugees in the West Bank. Key highlights included facilitating Japan’s food assistance to Palestine through the World Food Programme (WFP) and co-sponsoring the Palestinian Women’s Soccer League alongside the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In addition to addressing all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in his work, Matsui shared personal anecdotes about engaging with local children by teaching them elements of Japanese culture, such as origami and karate.

In discussing his tenure in Toronto, Matsui reflected on his role as Consul of Information and Culture, which involved participating in a range of cultural events. These included festivals hosted by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC), the annual Sakura celebration in High Park, and the "Next Stop Japan" initiative at Union Station. He also highlighted collaborative efforts between the Japanese government and Toronto City Council to enhance transportation infrastructure. Matsui emphasized the importance of adaptability and open-mindedness in diplomatic service, encouraging students to consider careers in foreign affairs.

The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, during which students engaged with Consul Matsui on topics such as the future of Canada-Japan relations, fostering cultural exchanges, and his transition from the private to the public sector.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Consul Masahiro Matsui for sharing his valuable experiences and wish him continued success as he embarks on the next chapter of his career beyond Toronto.
