Graduate student funding

The Centre for the Study of Korea is pleased to announce two opportunities for funding support for graduate students working on research projects in Korean Studies.

Interested graduate students must submit an application with support from their supervisor by April 30, 2023. Applications should be sent to Hae Yeon Choo via email, as a single PDF document, at hy.choo@utoronto.ca. The selection process is competitive. Preference will be given to students without any other access to funding and who have not yet received the CSK graduate student awards. Award descriptions

Research Travel Award

This award supports graduate students conducting PhD thesis projects related to Korean studies and is geared towards covering airfare to and from South Korea and/or field research expenses. The maximum award is $2,000 and we expect to give one award in the 2023-24 academic year.

Criteria

Applicants must be registered and enrolled full time in a doctorate program at the University of Toronto. Applicants must be engaged in research focusing on Korea. Other projects that figure Korea prominently in the research agenda may be considered. Preference will be given to applicants wishing to conduct field research in North America or South Korea and who have not received funding support from other sources.

Note

All awardees must submit detailed receipts, invoices, original boarding passes and a report summarizing their activities and expenses within 4 weeks of their return (or completion of their proposed research). The funds will be paid as a reimbursement of expenses.


Dissertation Writing Award

This award is aimed at post-funded cohort doctoral students who are working on research projects in Korean Studies and who are in the last phase of dissertation completion. This academic year (Fall 2023-Winter 2024), the CSK is able to offer one award in the amount of $4,000.

Criteria

Applicants must be registered and enrolled full time in a doctorate program at the University of Toronto. Applicants must be engaged in research focusing on Korea. Other projects that figure Korea prominently in the research agenda may be considered. Preference will be given to students who are no longer in the funded cohort and whose dissertation is approaching the last phase of completion.

  • Application letter with information about the progress of the dissertation, the expected timing of completion, and the applicant’s funding situation (700 words max)
  • Dissertation abstract (1,000 words max)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Transcript (unofficial copy is acceptable)
  • Letter of support from your faculty advisor, particularly about the progress of the dissertation and the expected timing of completion. (This can be emailed separately to hy.choo@utoronto.ca)
