Description and Eligibility Criteria
Reserved for graduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Science who have participated in or attended events sponsored by the Asian Institute whose research focuses on the societies and modern histories of countries affected by the Japanese Empire in Asia. The award will be used to help defray project costs associated with the travel and research of the applicant.
Award Value
The value and total number of individual awards will be determined annually. For the spring 2025 competition the Asian Institute anticipates 1-3 awards of approximately $1,200 to $3,500. The funds may be used anytime between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026.

Applicants must submit the following documents in a single PDF file, titled in the following format: LastName.ManFamilyScholarship.pdf. Applications must be submitted electronically with the subject line Man Family Scholarship 2025 to ai.asianstudies@utoronto.ca
- Research proposal of no more than 250 words, which includes a brief explanation of how the project relates to the Japanese Empire
- Recent CV
- Graduate academic transcripts (printout or pdf from ACORN is accepted)
- Letter of recommendation from a supervisor (emailed directly from faculty member to ai.asianstudies@utoronto.ca)
- Brief narrative of 50-100 words describing financial need and amount requested
Deadline: Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 5PM EDT. Late submissions will not be accepted.
