Ilya Yashin is a Russian democratic opposition leader, journalist, and former Moscow municipal councillor. A long-time ally of the late Boris Nemtsov and other pro-democracy figures, he has campaigned against corruption, electoral fraud, and Russia’s war against Ukraine. In 2022, he was sentenced to a long prison term on fabricated “disinformation” charges for speaking truthfully about atrocities in Bucha. His case has become a symbol of Vladimir Putin’s repression of dissent and of the courage of Russians who continue to resist.
