Main Bio

Nicola Nones is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. He specializes in international and comparative political economy, employing a range of quantitative and qualitative approaches. His current research focuses on three main areas:

  • Media and the Economy: How does the media describe the economy? How does media framing influence agents' perceptions of the economy? Under what conditions does media framing affect financial investors?
  • Political Economy of Money and Finance: What factors influence individuals' currency preferences? How and why do social groups lobby for changes to currency and monetary policy? Under what conditions do they do so, and through which channels?
  • Leaders in Political Economy: Do individual characteristics of leaders matter for economic policy? How does variation in ascriptive characteristics (e.g., gender, race) and/or acquired characteristics (e.g., occupation, education) explain leaders' preferences?

His research has been published or is forthcoming in International Studies Quarterly, New Political Economy, Business & Politics, and European Union Politics.

He received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Virginia in 2023. He also holds an M.Sc. in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics and Political Science, an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Bologna, and a B.A. in International Studies from the University of Bologna.
