Biography

Specializing in community development and social policy, Dr. Redden‘s work traverses the African Diaspora, simultaneously concerned with Black place-making and displacement. She has published studies that explore participatory action research and storytelling in urban planning practice. She is particularly interested in the role of narrative construction in racialized spatial injustice, blending humanistic inquiry with qualitative research methods to explore the lived experiences of residents and the ways in which they develop political consciousness. Dr. Redden’s research can be found in leading journals like the Journal of the American Planning Association and the Journal of Planning History.

In addition, Dr. Redden teaches courses that highlight inequalities in the built environment through the lens of the arts, specifically popular culture.

Her graduate courses include “Communication in the Face of Power” and “Social Policy and Planning,” both contributing to the Master of Science in Planning program’s core curriculum. While her undergraduate seminar is entitled “Black Masculinity in the ‘Hood” and prioritizes intertextual examination of cultural production and racial geographies. She is also the social policy planning concentration advisor for the Department of Geography & Planning.
