Location | Room 208, North House, 1 Devonshire Place, Toronto, ON, M5S 3K7
About the Event:

Please join us at the Centre for the Study of Korea for a discussion of South Korea's ongoing political turmoil and citizens’ protests. This gathering seeks to shed light on the contexts for and reactions to President Yoon Seok-yeol’s short-lived martial law declaration on December 3, 2024, and the popular protests and counter-protests for and against his impeachment and arrest.

The roundtable will feature short presentations by CSK and York University faculty and student organizers who will offer comments on various aspects of the situation, from the use of K-Pop lightsticks at mass gatherings, to the role of LGBTQ+ and feminist organizations in an updated democracy movement, to the discourse battle between political and civil society actors in a 21st century relational and media landscape.

Roundtable Presenters:

Yoonkyung Lee (U of T, Sociology); Hyun Ok Park (York, Sociology), Laam Hae (York, Politics), Jimin Gim (U of T, activist), Hyunyoung Ro (York, activist), Michelle Cho (U of T, East Asian Studies).
