ABOUT THE EVENT
“This Kind of Hope” is a gripping documentary that delves into the harrowing reality of political repression in Belarus through the lens of a courageous human rights defender. Directed by Anna Shishova-Bogolubova, the film portrays the life and work of Andrei Sannikov, a former Belarusian presidential candidate and a staunch advocate for democracy. The narrative intertwines Sannikov’s personal story of persecution and exile with the broader struggle against the authoritarian regime of Alexander Lukashenko, offering a profound exploration of the cost of dissent in one of Europe’s most repressive states.
Shot over several years, the film captures Sannikov’s exile in Warsaw, where he continues to fight for justice while longing to return to his homeland. Through poignant interviews and archival footage, This Kind of Hope sheds light on the enduring spirit of Belarusian activists who refuse to be silenced despite relentless oppression. The documentary serves as both a tribute to their resilience and a stark reminder of the fragile state of human rights in Belarus.
With its intimate storytelling and unflinching gaze, Pawel Siczek crafts a powerful testament to hope, resistance, and the enduring quest for freedom in the face of tyranny.
