The sanctions imposed on Russia in February 2022 were unprecedented in their scope, for a leading industrial economy. However they have not prevented Russia from pursuing its goal of victory over Ukraine. Why did the sanctions fail, and what role do they play in the current moves towards a peace settlement?
 
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Peter Rutland is a professor of government at Wesleyan University and vice president of the Association for Study of Nationalities. He studies the political economy of contemporary Russia and the dynamics of nationalism in the post-soviet space.
