American democracy is at a crossroads. The 2024 American election resulted in the victory of an openly authoritarian candidate, who has repeatedly threatened political rivals and supported a violent attempt to overturn a democratic election in 2021.

To discuss how the world’s oldest democracy got to this point, Professor Lucan Way addressed the dynamics of the American election with John Sides, a leading expert on American elections.  Sides is professor and William R. Kenan, Jr. Chair in the Department of Political Science at Vanderbilt University. He is the author/editor of six books, including Identity Crisis: The 2016 Presidential Campaign and The Battle for the Meaning of America, The Gamble: Choice and Chance in the 2012 Election, and Campaigns and Election: Rules, Reality, Strategy, Choice.
