Edward Schatz named Director of Centre for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies
Professor Edward Schatz has been named director of the Munk School’s Centre for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (CERES). Schatz’s appointment will begin July 1, 2022 and ends on June 20, 2027.
“I am delighted that Professor Schatz will direct CERES,” says Peter Loewen, director of the Munk School. “I have no doubt that CERES will flourish under his leadership, thanks to his vision, industry, creativity, and collegiality.”
Schatz holds a Ph.D. and an MA in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a BA in Soviet and East European Studies from Yale University. He joined the University of Toronto Mississauga in 2005 as assistant professor of Political Science. In 2008, he was awarded tenure and promoted to the rank of associate professor and was most recently promoted to the rank of professor in 2021.
Schatz’s research addresses various topics about politics and society in ex-Soviet Eurasia, particularly the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. He has published multiple books including Slow Anti-Americanism: Social Movements and Symbolic Politics in Central Asia (Stanford 2021), Paradox of Power: The Logics of State Weakness in Eurasia (Pittsburgh 2017) and Modern Clan Politics (Washington 2004).
Schatz’s predecessor, Professor Randall Hansen, concludes his appointment as director of CERES on June 30, 2022.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Professor Randall Hansen as he completes his term as director of CERES,” says Loewen. “Randall has been a wise and inspiring leader of CERES, and we look forward to his continued role at the Munk School.”
