Professor Mark Duggan to Join the Munk School in 2026

We are thrilled to share the news that Professor Mark Duggan will be joining the Munk School and the Department of Economics as a Visiting Professor for a year beginning July 1, 2026.

Mark is the Wayne and Jodi Cooperman Professor of Economics at Stanford University, 2014, and the Trione Director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR). He is an outstanding economist with an international reputation for his scholarship on economic and social policy issues.

Mark is an outstanding addition to our community, and I am hoping that he will spend time with us next year giving some lectures even before his Visiting Appointment begins, shares Janice Stein, Belzberg Professor of Conflict Management and the founding Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto.

Mark Duggan is The Wayne and Jodi Cooperman Professor of Economics at Stanford, a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering at M.I.T. in 1992 and 1994, respectively, and his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1999.

Professor Duggan's research focuses on the health care sector and on the effects of large-scale government expenditure programs such as social security and disability insurance. Some of his more recent research is exploring the causes and consequences of homelessness along with the effects of government policies to address it. His research has been published in leading academic journals including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Quarterly Journal of Economics and has been featured in The Economist, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and many other media outlets. Professor Duggan was the 2010 recipient of the ASHEcon Medal as the leading health economist in the U.S. under the age of 40. He served from 2009-10 as the Senior Economist for Health Care Policy on President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers and from 2015 – 2024 as the Director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR). Professor Duggan teaches Principles of Economics (both micro and macro) to Stanford undergraduates, has advised 60 Ph.D. students during his career, and received the Stanford Economics Department’s Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award in 2022.
