Welcoming Kenichi Ariga as affiliated faculty

We extend a warm welcome to Professor Kenichi Ariga as affiliated faculty of the Centre for the Study of Global Japan. He is an associate professor (teaching stream) in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto.

Professor Ariga’s is an expert of quantitative political methodology and comparative electoral and legislative politics. His research makes innovative use of elections data in Japan to show that Japanese politicians enjoy surprisingly little incumbency advantage. His recent publications include: “Incumbency Disadvantage under Electoral Rules with Intra-Party Competition: Evidence from Japan” (Journal of Politics 2015) and “No Sorting, No Advantage: Regression Discontinuity Estimates of Incumbency Advantage in Japan” (Electoral Studies 2016, with Yusaku Horiuchi, Roland Mansilla, and Michio Umeda).
