Michael Roellinghoff (he/him) is an Associate at the Asian Institute and a Research Fellow at the University of Alberta. Prior to this, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Tokyo. He completed his doctoral research in the University of Toronto Department of History in 2019. His research focuses on the 19th century Japanese settler colonization of Hokkaido and its effects on the Indigenous Ainu people. He is currently working on a book project focusing on the question of "de-indigenization": colonial discourses and policies which claim that the Ainu are non-native to the soil of their colonized homeland.
