MPP Field Report: Community Housing Lessons from London

PPG2013 Comparative Urban Governance

The Munk School is pleased to share this collaborative field report documenting the School’s first international field course for Master of Public Policy students: PPG2013 Comparative Urban Governance.

Led by Professor Gabriel Eidelman, this two-week program in February 2025 explored the question: What policy lessons can we learn from other cities? After building a foundation in Toronto focused on comparative methods and governance frameworks, students traveled to London to examine innovative community-led housing models and their potential relevance for Toronto’s housing sector. Through meetings with experts from the London School of Economics, Greater London Authority, and local organizations in Lambeth, Lewisham, and Hackney, students engaged in deep, hands-on learning.

The experience brought together academic insight, real-world policy challenges, and meaningful moments of connection—both in and out of the classroom. The report blends travel reflection with policy analysis, offering fresh ideas for affordable housing and a powerful example of experiential education in action.
